Prof Eszter Bánffy
Eszter Bánffy (ORCID ID: 0000-0001-5156-826X) graduated in prehistoric and medieval archaeology, as well as Indology and comparative Indoeuropean linguistics at the ELTE University, Budapest. She has been doing research in the prehistory of Central and South East Europe and became involved also in theoretical issues and matters of heritage protection. As a professor of prehistoric archaeology and of geoarchaeology, she has been conducting several projects within Hungary. She is in charge of a work team while the programs are extended with several international projects. Eszter Bánffy is an author of ten books, editor of three volumes, and almost two hundred chapters and articles, published in Europe and beyond. She has given lectures and courses in universities of Europe and in America, including Harvard, where she spent a semester as visiting scholar in 2008. She served on the Board of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) as an executive board member and as secretary (2005-2011). She became EAA President in 2021. Besides working in the Institute of Archaeology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, she is a professor supervising Ph.D. students at two universities: ELTE Budapest and SZTE Szeged. In 2017 she was elected to the British Academy. In 2013 she started to work as the director of the Romano-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute, in Frankfurt. In this position, she also helps with international archaeological projects, especially between West and East European countries.
