New Applications for Leo Swan’s Aerial Photographic Archive

The Discovery Programme team used Leo Swan’s 1973 photos of the excavations at Knowth to create a 3D model of the site under excavation. One of the great benefits of the structure from motion technique for making 3d models is that imagery does not have to be gathered for photogrammetric purposes. This gives us the possibility of re-purposing old photographs. A set of 20 black and white images of the Knowth excavation taken by Leo Swan in 1973 were used to create a 3 dimensional snapshot in time.
